Dramatic 20m fall under a stone footbridge.
Aira Force is one of the Lake District’s best-known waterfalls, dropping around 65 feet through a wooded glen above Ullswater. The National Trust has looked after the site since it bought Gowbarrow Park in 1906, and stone-arched bridges above and below the fall let you take in the view from both top and bottom. Surfaced paths with steps climb up from the pay-and-display car parks near the lakeshore — expect crowds on a fine weekend. Penrith station is about 15km to the north-east.
