At 1,732 feet up on the open moors above Swaledale, the Tan Hill Inn is the highest pub in Britain — a lone seventeenth-century inn on the Pennine Way, miles from the nearest neighbour. It began life serving local coal miners and now keeps its fires going year-round for walkers and the curious. The nearest village is Keld; Kirkby Stephen station is about 13km west. Check the weather before you set out, especially in winter.
