Loweswater
Local highlightA small, quiet lake in the north-western corner of the Lake District that, oddly, drains inland towards the other lakes rather than out to sea
Loweswater is one of the smaller and quieter Lake District lakes, off in the north-western fells away from the busiest spots. The odd thing about it is the drainage: where you would expect a lake this close to the coast to run out to the sea, Loweswater flows the other way, inland towards Crummock Water and Buttermere. The National Trust looks after it, low fells rise on either side, and a good path runs right round, partly through woodland along the southern shore. The Kirkstile Inn sits just up the road at Loweswater village. It is a gentle, low-key corner of the Lake District rather than a dramatic one.
