Loch Morar
Local highlightThe deepest freshwater loch in Britain, plunging over 300 metres between Mallaig and the silver sands of its western shore
Loch Morar is the deepest body of fresh water in Britain, dropping more than 300 metres — far below sea level — in a narrow trench walled by rocky hills. Only a very short river separates its western end from the sea near Morar, where the beaches of the Silver Sands of Morar run out in pale sand and turquoise shallows. Like Loch Ness away to the east, Morar has its own monster story; the creature is called Morag, and old reports of sightings turn up now and then, though nothing has ever come of them. The wild peninsula of Knoydart lies just to the north, and the whole area, part of Morar, Moidart and Ardnamurchan, is among the emptiest and finest on the west coast.
