Places to explore in South LanarkshireScotland · Southern Scotland
South Lanarkshire follows the Clyde upstream from the edge of Glasgow into the empty Southern Uplands. In the north the river runs past the red sandstone Bothwell Castle, the largest thirteenth-century stronghold in Scotland, and the fortified Craignethan Castle. At New Lanark, Robert Owen built a model cotton-mill village beside the Falls of Clyde, now a World Heritage Site. Southward the land rises to high sheep moor and the old lead-mining villages of Leadhills and Wanlockhead, the highest in Scotland. The Clyde Walkway threads the valley from end to end.
