Biggar sits at the top of Clydesdale, a wide-streeted old market town that has ended up with a surprising cluster of small museums, including a preserved Victorian gasworks. It throws a famous Hogmanay bonfire down the high street every 31 December, and Biggar Kirk, one of Scotland’s last pre-Reformation churches, stands just off the main street. Carstairs is the nearest station, about 12km to the north-west.
