Douglas takes its name from the powerful Douglas family, whose story runs right through Scottish history. St Bride’s Church holds the tombs of the Douglas lords, and the village is where the Cameronians regiment has its origins. It’s a quiet spot well inland; Lanark, about 14km to the north, is the nearest station.
