The Yorkshire Sculpture Park opened in 1977 as the first of its kind in the country, spread across 500 acres of the old Bretton Hall estate near Wakefield. Works by Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth — both Yorkshire-born — sit out in the fields and woods, alongside changing exhibitions and formal gardens by the galleries. The grounds are open daily and free to walk, though there’s a parking charge. Darton station is nearest, a few kilometres off, but most people come by car.
