Yorkshire’s tallest spire, at 247 feet, belongs to Wakefield Cathedral, rising over the pedestrianised city centre. It stayed a parish church until 1888, when the new Diocese of Wakefield was created and it was raised to cathedral status. Open daily and free to look round, it’s a five-minute walk from Wakefield Westgate station. The Georgian Westgate Unitarian Chapel is close by for contrast.
