The only Grade I-listed parkland in South Yorkshire, Wentworth Castle Gardens sits above Stainborough near Barnsley — sixty acres of historic gardens now cared for by the National Trust. Its centrepiece is a restored Victorian glasshouse, reopened in 2013, and up on the hill stands Stainborough Castle, a mock ruin finished in 1730 as an eyecatcher. Paid entry. Dodworth station is about 2.5km north, and Cannon Hall makes an easy second stop.
