The Stonor family have held this Chiltern valley for over 800 years, keeping to the Catholic faith through the penal centuries, and it was here in 1581 that Edmund Campion secretly printed a pamphlet before his arrest. The house sits below a wooded deer park, with terraced gardens rising behind it. Paid entry on open days; Henley-on-Thames station is about 7km to the south.
