St Bartholomew's Cemetery, Exeter
Open accessfree to visit at any reasonable time
Half a mile from Exeter Cathedral, St Bartholomew’s is a former municipal cemetery laid out in 1835–37, and thought to be the first in England built and paid for by a council rather than a private company. Burials stopped in 1874, and it’s since been landscaped as a public garden — the Egyptian-style catacombs and obelisk gateposts still stand, sealed, behind their 20th-century gates. Free to walk in, a few minutes from Exeter Central station.
