A row of Dutch-gabled merchant houses along the Strand marks Topsham’s past as a busy Exe estuary port, when trade with the Low Countries paid for them. Now it runs to antique shops, galleries and quayside pubs looking over the tidal mudflats, which draw wading birds in winter. The station is in the village, and the Darts Farm food hall is just across the river.
