The Courtenay family, Earls of Devon, have held Powderham since Sir Philip Courtenay began building it in the 1390s. It sits low beside the Exe estuary near Kenton, inside a deer park grazed by fallow deer, the medieval core much altered over later centuries. House and gardens open to visitors on paid tickets, generally spring through autumn; the estuary and its birds lie right alongside.
