A sixteen-sided house is a rare thing, and A la Ronde is one — built in 1796 for two unmarried cousins, Jane and Mary Parminter, on their return from a European grand tour, on the hills above Exmouth. Rooms radiate from a central hall up to a gallery encrusted with shells and feathers that the cousins spent years making. The shell gallery is too fragile to enter, but you can view it by camera. National Trust; paid entry.
