Come to Killerton in spring, when the hillside garden lights up with magnolias, rhododendrons and azaleas. The Acland family’s Georgian estate near Broadclyst was planted from the 1770s by John Veitch, founder of the great Devon nursery dynasty, and rare trees still climb the slope above the house. National Trust; paid entry, with wide estate walks beyond the garden. Cranbrook station is about 5km south-east.
