The gardens at Cholmondeley Castle are among the most romantic in Cheshire, laid out below a castellated house built in the early 1800s. There’s a temple garden set around an island pool, a glade, an arboretum and generous herbaceous borders to wander. Open seasonally, with an admission charge. The Cholmondeley Arms, in a converted village schoolhouse, is close by for lunch. Wrenbury station is about 8km to the south-east.
