Malpas is a hilltop market village of Georgian brick on the Welsh border, its high street climbing to the fine sandstone church of St Oswald at the very top — worth the walk up for the carved alabaster tombs inside. It’s quiet these days, with a scatter of independent shops. Well off the rail network: Whitchurch, just over the Shropshire line, is the nearest station at about 9km.
