Royal Brackla sits on the Cawdor estate near Nairn, and carries a claim worth the name. Founded in 1812, it became the first whisky distillery to be granted a royal warrant, from King William IV in 1833. Tours here run by appointment rather than drop-in, so you’ll need to arrange a visit ahead. The village of Cawdor, with its famous castle, is just up the road.
