Cawdor is a trim estate village between Nairn and Inverness, gathered around the kirk, the tavern and the gates of Cawdor Castle. Shakespeare made Macbeth ‘Thane of Cawdor’, though the castle came a good few centuries too late for the real Macbeth: its oldest parts date from the late 14th century. Still a private family home, it opens to visitors through the summer, roughly late April to early October, and the gardens are gorgeous.
