The oldest building in Filey, St Oswald’s stands slightly apart from the town across a wooded ravine, close to the sea. It’s a big 12th-century church that Pevsner rated the finest in this corner of the old East Riding, and the roof of its tower carries nearly 1,500 pieces of medieval graffiti — including fully rigged ships scratched there by parishioners over some 400 years. Open access and free; the station is about ten minutes’ walk.
