St Andrew’s has one of the oldest round towers in England, its rough flint-and-rubble stump reckoned to be Saxon, possibly around AD 900. Round towers are a Norfolk speciality because the county has plenty of flint but no good building stone to dress square corners, so masons simply built the tower round. The little church stands on a low mound in a circular churchyard. Open access, deep in farmland west of Swaffham.
