A Norman planned town survives almost intact at Castle Acre. You enter under the flint Bailey Gate, with the earthworks of William de Warenne’s castle at one end of the village and the ruins of his Cluniac priory, one of the earliest in England, at the other. The priory’s carved west front is the finest thing here. Both castle and priory are English Heritage sites you can walk into.
