Houghton was built in the 1720s for Sir Robert Walpole, Britain’s first prime minister, and ranks among the finest Palladian houses in England. Its five-acre walled garden holds a double herbaceous border and a rose parterre, while the parkland now shows contemporary sculpture by the likes of Richard Long and James Turrell, alongside a herd of white fallow deer. Paid entry. Kings Lynn station is about 18km south-west.
