Charles Bathurst, later Lord Bledisloe, gave Bathurst Pool to Lydney and Aylburton to mark the 21st birthday of his eldest son, Benjamin, and the pool opened on 2 October 1920. For its early decades the pool was emptied every Saturday night and refilled from a nearby stream on Sunday morning. The council decided to close it in 1999, and the next spring local people formed the Friends of Bathurst Pool, a charity that has run the pool on a lease ever since, with volunteers doing the work. The season runs from about May to early September; there’s no booking, and you pay cash at the gate. Lydney station is about 1km south-east, and Lydney Park Gardens, on the Bathurst family’s estate, is about 1.5km west.
