Edward II was imprisoned and murdered at Berkeley in 1327, and the castle has been the Berkeley family’s home for well over 800 years — one of the longest unbroken tenures in England. The red-stone keep and great hall look out over terraced gardens and the Severn Vale. House and gardens open to visitors on set days through the warmer months. Lydney station is about 6km away, across the estuary.
