Out in the Lincolnshire fields, more or less on its own, stands the largest monastic gatehouse in Britain — three storeys of brick and stone raised in the 1380s and approached along a walled causeway. Behind it the Augustinian abbey, founded in 1139 and once among the richest in the country, is down to footings and a piece of the octagonal chapter house. English Heritage have the site shut for repairs, with pre-booked tours only and a reopening expected in spring 2027, so check before setting off. Thornton Abbey station is a ten-minute walk; Barton-upon-Humber is 9km west.
