Hedon was one of England’s busiest ports in the 12th and 13th centuries, before the creeks silted up and Hull took its trade. What survives is a quiet Holderness town and the enormous church of St Augustine — the ‘King of Holderness’ — whose tall tower stands over the flat land for miles around. Hull, with the nearest station, is about 10km west.
