A sixty-foot whale skeleton in the old stables is the strangest thing on show at Burton Constable Hall, brought here after a sperm whale washed up on the Holderness coast in 1825 — Herman Melville later referenced it in Moby-Dick. The Elizabethan house has been the Constable family’s home for more than 800 years, and its 30-odd rooms include William Constable’s 18th-century Cabinet of Curiosities. Hall and parkland, laid out by Capability Brown, open daily through most of the year with an admission charge. Hedon and its medieval church are a few miles south.
