Handsome market town with medieval North Bar.
Beverley is a handsome medieval market town with two extraordinary churches. The great Minster, begun in 1220 over the tomb of St John of Beverley, is a soaring Gothic pile that rivals many cathedrals; St Mary’s, up near the market place, is nearly as fine. Both are Grade I listed, and the medieval North Bar gate still spans the road into town. There’s a lively Saturday market, and the station is a few minutes from the centre.
