Powerful falls on the River Isla dropping into a deep gorge pool, throwing up the spray that gave the place its smoky name
Reekie Linn is a waterfall on the River Isla, a few miles north of the village of Alyth, on the boundary of Angus and Perthshire. When the river is high it pours over a rock lip and drops into a deep, dark pool in a wooded gorge — a linn being the Scots word for the pool that sits below a fall. “Reekie” means smoky, for the spray that lifts off the water and hangs in the gorge when the Isla is in spate. Two separate falls run side by side and join into one broad curtain once there’s enough water behind them. A short path from the car park leads to fenced viewpoints on the rim, and the Cateran Trail long-distance walk passes close by.
