Meigle is a quiet Strathmore village with an outsized treasure: its old schoolhouse museum holds 27 carved Pictish stones, one of the finest collections in Scotland, run by Historic Environment Scotland. Several are big cross-slabs pulled from the churchyard next door, dense with beasts and horsemen. Worth an hour if you’re passing. Invergowrie is the nearest station, about 16km south-east, so it’s easiest reached by car.
