Cistercian monks came from Melrose in 1162 to found Coupar Angus Abbey, which grew into one of the richest houses in Scotland and covered a good slice of what is now the town. Almost nothing is left. Reformers burned it, later generations carted off the stone, and a ruined scrap of gatehouse by the burial ground is the only standing piece. The Victorian Abbey Church on the old church’s footprint is a different building, though it shelters abbey tomb slabs and a knight’s effigy. Free to walk round, and Coupar Angus is either side of it.
