St Mawes guards the Roseland side of Carrick Roads, and its castle is the draw: a clover-leaf artillery fort built by Henry VIII between 1540 and 1542, and one of the best-preserved of his coastal defences. The village is a sailing place, cottages rising from a small harbour, with a ferry across to Falmouth and another up the creek to St Just in Roseland. English Heritage runs the castle.
