Penclawdd stands on the Loughor estuary on north Gower, long the centre of cockle gathering in the Burry Inlet. Gatherers — traditionally the women of the village — worked the sands at low tide, and Penclawdd cockles are still sold and cooked across the region. The estuary and its wading birds spread out below the houses. Bynea station is across the water, about 3km north.
