St Brynach’s Church at Nevern is worth the detour. In the churchyard stands the Nevern Cross, a tall 10th- or 11th-century Celtic high cross cut from a single block of dolerite, alongside an avenue of ancient yews, one of which ‘bleeds’ a red sap. A pilgrims’ cross is carved into the rock on the lane up to the ruined castle. The village sits in a wooded valley just east of Newport.
