Menai Bridge grew up around Thomas Telford’s suspension bridge of 1826, the first fixed crossing to the mainland and still carrying traffic over the strait. Its Welsh name, Porthaethwy, recalls the ferry the bridge replaced. Below the town a short causeway leads to Church Island and the little St Tysilio’s church. Independent shops and cafes make it a good stop; Bangor station is under 2km away to the south-east.
