The 1932 Mass Trespass onto Kinder Scout set off from Hayfield, a protest that helped win the right to roam across open country. The village is a tidy huddle of gritstone at the mountain’s western foot, still the natural place for walkers to start the climb onto the plateau. New Mills Central station is about 4km to the south-west.
