Dunvegan is a working village at the head of its loch on north-west Skye, best known for Dunvegan Castle, seat of the chiefs of Clan MacLeod and open to visitors along with its gardens. A few miles further on, a walk leads out to the Coral Beach, whose bright white “sand” is actually bleached maerl — a calcified seaweed — rather than true coral. The village has shops, hotels and the road out to Colbost.
