From St John’s church at the bottom, the High Street in Bishop’s Castle climbs to a Georgian town hall with a clock cupola at the top. Near the town hall, the Elizabethan House on Crutches has its upstairs propped on wooden posts over a cobbled alley, and holds a small free museum of local life, open at weekends in season. The Bishop of Hereford’s castle was flattened for a bowling green in the 1700s, bar a stretch of wall. From 1584 to 1832 the town had two MPs, and in 1726 one candidate showed that 51 of the 52 voters had been bribed. The Three Tuns has brewed on its site since 1642, and the Shropshire Way runs through.
