A.E. Housman borrowed a local rhyme for it — Clunton and Clunbury, Clungunford and Clun, the quietest places under the sun — and Clun still earns the name. The Norman castle stands ruined on its mound above the little River Clun, and a five-arched packhorse bridge, built around 1450 with pedestrian refuges cut into the parapets, still carries the old road across. Knucklas station is about 7km off.
