Allendale is a moorland village in the East Allen valley, best known for its Tar Bar’l ceremony every New Year’s Eve, when men parade blazing barrels of tar on their heads to the square and light a midwinter bonfire. The rest of the year it’s a quiet spot for walks on the surrounding fells. Haydon Bridge, on the Tyne Valley line, is about 9km north.
