A long medieval bridge of pale stone crosses the River Arun just west of Pulborough, seven arches wide. The tall central arch was raised higher than the rest so that barges could pass beneath when the Arun was a working navigation. It’s one of the finest medieval bridges in Sussex, and since a modern road bridge took over the traffic alongside, the old crossing has been left to people on foot. Stopham Vineyard is a short way up the lane, and the crossing lies within the South Downs national park, with the wetlands of the Upper Arun right beside the bridge.
