Earl’s Hill, a craggy volcanic knot above Pontesbury, became Shropshire Wildlife Trust’s very first nature reserve in 1964. An Iron Age hillfort crowns the top, and the steep valley below holds ancient woodland that fills with birdsong and bluebells in spring. It’s a stiff little pull to the summit for a wide view over the Rea valley. Open reserve, free; Shrewsbury is the nearest station, about 12km north-east.
