The climbers' inn at the head of Wasdale, beneath Great Gable and Scafell.
The Wasdale Head Inn is a remote inn beneath Great Gable and the Scafell range, famous as the cradle of British rock climbing — Victorian pioneers such as Walter Haskett Smith based themselves here to tackle Napes Needle. Its walls are hung with old climbing photographs. A former landlord, Will Ritson, was celebrated as the biggest liar in England, and the World’s Biggest Liar contest is still held in his memory. Tiny St Olaf’s church stands close by, and there are rooms for walkers taking on Wasdale Head’s big fells.
