Scafell is the quieter, rockier twin of Scafell Pike — at 964m the second-highest mountain in England, just a few metres below its more famous neighbour. The two stand barely a kilometre apart, but getting between them on foot is the catch. The direct link, Broad Stand, is a short rock climb rather than a walk, and has caught out many people who underestimated it; walkers cross instead by longer detours around Foxes Tarn or Lord’s Rake. The north face falls away in Scafell Crag, among the biggest cliffs of the Lake District and serious climbing ground. The usual walkers’ way up avoids all of that, climbing from Wasdale Head to the north or from Eskdale to the south. On a clear day the view over Wast Water and out to the coast is worth the effort. Take care near the crag edges, and above all don’t be tempted onto Broad Stand thinking it is a shortcut.
