A tarn is a small mountain lake, and Sprinkling Tarn is a fine one — a rocky pool high on the fells below Great End, just north of the Sty Head pass between Borrowdale and Wasdale. It has a name among walkers as one of the wettest spots in England, lying among the highest ground in the Lake District where wet weather blows in off the sea and piles up against the crags. There is no road anywhere near; you reach it on foot, usually while climbing Great Gable or crossing the passes above Wasdale Head. On a still day the surrounding crags reflect in the water, which is reward enough for the climb up.
