England's steepest, most hair-raising road.
If you fancy driving England’s steepest road, Hardknott Pass climbs out of Eskdale at gradients of around 1 in 3, with tight hairpins and a Roman fort perched partway up. The fell views from the top are huge. It’s genuinely not for nervous drivers or anything long — best avoided in ice, low cloud or high summer traffic, and a low gear is your friend. At its eastern foot the road drops to meet Wrynose Pass at the Three Shire Stone.
