A broad grassy fell in the far eastern Lake District, named after the Roman road that once ran clean over its flat top

High Street is an 829m fell east of Kirkstone Pass, the highest of the Lake District’s far eastern fells. The Romans built the High Street Roman road along this ridge to link their forts, and the name stuck to the hill. The summit is a wide grassy plateau, so flat that horse races and summer fairs were once held up here, and it is still marked as Racecourse Hill on maps. Most walkers climb it from Mardale Head beside Haweswater Reservoir, taking the fine Rough Crag ridge above the deep tarn of Blea Water. The broad top gives few landmarks in mist, so carry a map and compass.
