This is the softer edge of the Highlands, where the River Earn spills out of Loch Earn and runs east through a broad, farmed strath between Comrie and St Fillans. At thirty-one square kilometres it is one of the smaller scenic areas, a gentle valley with steep hills rising on either side and the Highland line running right through it.

The Rob Roy Way threads across this part of the southern Highlands, and it is an obvious ready-made route for anyone wanting a longer walk through the area. For a hill, Mor Bheinn is a good half-day out with a view down the loch, and Ben Clach offers quieter walking in the hills to the south.

The valley floor and lower tracks are easygoing and suit a relaxed day out. The open hillsides are rougher and boggier than they look from the road, so decent boots make a real difference, particularly outside high summer.
